Traffic Warrants in Calcasieu Parish
A traffic citation in Calcasieu Parish is a signed promise to appear, and missing the date breaks that promise. Lake Charles City Court explains the trigger plainly: when payment does not arrive before the court date and the driver does not show up, the ticket becomes a warrant. Only a judge can issue or recall one. The court that wrote the ticket also holds the paperwork, and in Calcasieu Parish that means knowing which court you are dealing with. Lake Charles City Court covers Ward 3, Sulphur City Court covers Ward 4, Vinton Municipal Court handles the town's citations, and DeQuincy routes questions through its City Court Clerk. The Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court keeps 14th Judicial District Court records, not city files, so a parish-level search can miss a city warrant entirely. The municipal court warrant page explains how those courts issue and recall their own process.
Calcasieu Parish Traffic Warrant Timeline
The clock starts on the court date printed on the citation. If payment never arrives and the driver never appears, the citation turns into a Calcasieu Parish warrant. Lake Charles charges the case under Louisiana R.S. 32:57.1, adds a $100 warrant penalty, and reports the driver to the Office of Motor Vehicles. Reinstatement is a separate, later step. The court describes an added $50 payment to the motor vehicle office once fines and costs are handled. Six months of no activity can also trigger a collection referral.
Citation issued › court date passes without payment or appearance › warrant and motor vehicle report › court compliance › reinstatement.

Start with the issuing court.
How to Check for a Traffic Warrant
No single call covers every court in Calcasieu Parish. Each city court keeps its own citation files. The six justice of the peace wards do too, and the parish JP directory lists them all.
- Read the citation or last notice for the court, the citation number, and the original court date.
- Call the issuing court and ask whether the ticket is payable, already a warrant, eligible for a new date, or set for a judge. Lake Charles traffic questions go to 337-491-1565, Sulphur City Court to 337-527-7006, and Vinton to 337-589-7453.
- Use the payment route the court gives you. Vinton splits citations by date, one vendor before September 18, 2019 and another after, and mailed payments must be a money order or cashier's check. DeQuincy questions route through City Hall at 337-786-8211.
- For a district-level matter, call the Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court at 337-437-3558 ext. 165, or search the clerk's online services.
- File a written request when a phone answer is not enough, using the Lake Charles City Court form for city records and the CPSO public-records request for sheriff material. The license layer runs separately under R.S. 32:57.1, so court compliance comes before any motor vehicle confirmation.
Why No Calcasieu Parish Warrant Portal
Louisiana keeps no single public warrant index. Calcasieu Parish has no parishwide traffic-warrant portal either. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office lists a warrants department and accepts public-records requests, but it posts no searchable warrant list.
Quick answer: When a state or sheriff search shows nothing, a traffic warrant can still sit in a city or ward court file that never reached that page.
Statewide services do not fill that gap. LAVINE is a custody and victim-notification system, and the state corrections most-wanted page is a curated probation subset. The warrant search page covers other Calcasieu Parish records.
What a Traffic Warrant Shows
Calcasieu Parish assigns no standard traffic-warrant number, so treat the citation number as your key.
| Citation or warrant number | Use the number printed on the ticket, in the court's own format, for example TICKET-000000. |
|---|---|
| Court, city, or ward | The city court or justice of the peace ward that issued it. |
| Charge or offense | The moving or equipment violation, with a statute or ordinance noted. |
| Dates | Issue date, original appearance date, and the failure-to-appear date. |
| Warrant or contempt penalty | The amount added after a missed date, in the court's figures. |
| Motor vehicle report and status | Whether the court reported the matter, what status followed, and any recall date. |
Sulphur Tickets and Calcasieu Parish Warrants
Sulphur runs its own court, marshal, and prosecutor inside Calcasieu Parish, and it keeps those roles separate. State law created Sulphur City Court, whose jurisdiction reaches past the city limits. For a Sulphur Police ticket, start with the court that set the date. Traffic-ticket questions go to the City Prosecutor at 337-528-9438. The Ward 4 Marshal handles service questions, not the recall decision.

Calcasieu Parish Limited-Amnesty Warrant Stay
Lake Charles City Court publishes a limited-amnesty and warrant-stay procedure covering existing criminal and traffic warrants plus driver's license forfeitures. It is not a parishwide program, so Calcasieu Parish drivers elsewhere should check their own court. Per the official notice, a person contacts the criminal and traffic department and gives identifying information plus an updated physical address, phone, and email. A new court date then comes by regular mail. The warrant stays in place until that date. Showing up gets it recalled and waives earlier contempt; a new missed date reinstates it. Note: The notice dates from limited court operations, so confirm with the court that the procedure is still open.
Paying or Lifting a Traffic Warrant
Call the issuing court before you pay anything. A payment sent to the wrong office leaves the Calcasieu Parish warrant open. Some charges must go before a judge no matter what, including DWI, reckless operation, drag racing, school-zone speeding, more than 20 mph over, leaving an accident, and license charges.
- Confirm the warrant and the exact amount with the issuing court.
- Pay through the route the court offers. Lake Charles takes eligible tickets online, by mail, by phone, or in person, does not take checks, and adds a 5% card fee.
- Ask for a new date when a judge is required. Confirm the recall and the motor vehicle notice separately, and keep the receipt.
Warning: A traffic warrant is not recalled until the fine is paid, a reset is granted, or the driver appears. Lake Charles adds a $100 warrant penalty and a motor vehicle report, and court compliance comes before any motor vehicle confirmation. The limited-amnesty stay only holds the warrant until the new date.
Calcasieu Parish Traffic Warrant Status Terms
Status words on a Calcasieu Parish traffic file carry different consequences. Mixing them up makes the fix harder.
- Traffic warrant
- A court warrant that follows an unpaid citation or a missed traffic appearance.
- Failure to appear
- Missing a required court date after notice, recorded under La. C.Cr.P. art. 333.
- Capias
- A Louisiana process directing that a person be taken into custody.
- Contempt or warrant penalty
- The amount added after a missed date, such as the $100 Lake Charles penalty.
- License suspension or hold
- The motor vehicle consequence after a court reports a failure to appear or nonpayment.
- Recall
- The judge withdraws the warrant. Ask for the docket entry and confirm updates.
Traffic Warrant vs FTA and License Holds
One missed Calcasieu Parish citation can start more than one process, and clearing the warrant may not clear the rest.
| Mechanism | What Triggers It | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic warrant | An unpaid citation or a missed traffic date | Lets an officer arrest the driver |
| Failure to appear | A missed setting after notice | Adds a court event and a separate charge |
| License or registration hold | A court report to the motor vehicle office | Blocks a license or renewal until the case clears |
The Calcasieu Parish court controls the warrant and its recall. The motor vehicle office only acts on the court's notice.
